Just outside of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, down a narrow country lane, lies La Bastide de Moustiers. This countryside retreat enjoys a beautiful setting and offers thirteen guest rooms. Created by famous chef Alain Ducasse, the inn has its own vegetable garden for use in his renowned restaurant.
Tim and I checked in and were shown to our room “Potiron,” or Pumpkin. Our tiny room was lovely, if a bit odd since the bed was located up a set of stairs on the mezzanine. We were invited to take advantage of the sitting area just outside our door or the expansive terrace, but we decided to take a nap instead.
What a Beautiful Setting for the Inn |
Our Room "Potiron" and the Sitting Room Outside |
When we were working with our travel specialist on restaurant selections, we were encouraged to dine in the restaurant here. At first, I hesitated but eventually agreed, and today I hoped against hope that tonight’s dining experience would be better than our previous ones. And it was!
We started with drinks and complimentary amuse-bouches on the terrace overlooking the valley and then moved inside to the lovely dining room.
Drinks on the Terrace |
Since I photographed the menu, I can relay exactly what I ordered. My starter was “Jérôme’s green asparagus, trout egg zabaglione, bottarga” – it was delicious. For my main course, I chose “grilled Mediterranean meagre [a white fish similar to wild sea bass], purple artichokes from Provence, mint, and capers” – the flavors and texture were incredible. Finally, dessert – “rhubarb on the embers, hibiscus blossom, three vanilla ice cream” – another culinary delight. I don’t remember what Tim ordered, but he seemed to be equally pleased.
The Entire Dining Experience Was Exceptional |
Not only was the food outstanding, but the service was exceptional and reminded me of watching a ballet. Everything was done to perfection! The restaurant certainly lived up to its reputation and the one Michelin star that it has earned. Our night at La Bastide De Moustiers was a treat and an amazing experience. It was definitely a highlight of our trip.
