Day 104 – Sail the Indian and Atlantic Oceans

Today was a much-needed day at sea after five consecutive port days. We are continuing to sail the Indian Ocean, which will converge with the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Agulhas, the rocky headland that lies even farther south on the African continent than the more well-known Cape Point that is located at the tip of the Cape of Good Hope. We will cross this convergence of oceans sometime today or tonight.

Viking always fills sea days with lots of activities, and today was no exception. After sleeping late, I attended the Farewell Celebration, where we said goodbye to the guests, and crew, disembarking in Cape Town, South Africa. For a change, this celebration took place in the Atrium, and the Guest Choir sang for us. We joined the senior officers in a toast and applauded the crew as they descended the stairs.

For me, the most poignant part of the celebration was Cruise Director Cornelia’s comments about our visits to the many places in Africa and the beauty, yet the poverty, we had seen. After reminding us that not everyone is as lucky as we are to be sailing on the Viking Sky, she then sang “Imagine,” a perfect choice. I know that I was not the only one with tears in my eyes when she finished.

Chef Alistair and his culinary team had another special evening planned for us – a Côte de Boeuf dinner, served to us at the Pool Grill. Tim and I began our meal with a Caesar salad and a granite, and we were then presented with a serving plate for the two of us. We feasted on this fabulous cut of beef and assorted vegetables before our dessert of lemon meringue pie, a chocolate delight, and ice cream. It was pleasant sitting outside, and the food was quite a treat.

I met tonight’s guest entertainer when she boarded the ship in Gqeberha and decided to watch her performance in person tonight. Anelisa Lamola has a powerful voice, and she presented “She’s Got Soul,” a wonderful show with many of my favorite songs. I’m so glad that I didn’t miss this one.
