Day 31 – Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

We sailed into Papeete, Tahiti, this morning under cloudy skies with a view of the extinct volcanic mountains in the distance. Pilot boats and an outrigger canoe sailed alongside us.

I was so hopeful that I would feel better today, but a coughing fit that lasted for almost 15 minutes this morning dashed those hopes. I also realized it was probably past the time to visit the Medical Center, but better late than never.

The staff there was still caring for the passenger with the medical emergency, but Dr. Mthombeni saw me and diagnosed an upper respiratory viral infection, which I had expected. She gave me several medications and recommended that I continue to rest for the next day or so. I wasn’t surprised that I would not be setting foot on Tahiti today. Maybe Bora Bora tomorrow?

Although I stayed behind, I was glad that Tim decided to go ashore this afternoon. He took the “Discover the Museum of Tahiti and Its Island” excursion, a new one that was just announced yesterday. This was the description:

Discover the fascinating history of Tahiti and her islands with this enriching visit to the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands. Set in a lush environment, the museum immerses you in Polynesian culture through an impressive collection of artifacts, sculptures, traditional costumes, and exhibits on the local flora and fauna. Learn about the history, customs, and legends of the islands of Polynesia while exploring ancient artifacts and unique works of art. This tour offers an in-depth look at Tahiti's rich cultural heritage, perfect for those passionate about history and local culture.

Tim shared a few photos of items that caught his eye.

The view of Tahiti from my balcony was not a beautiful tropical island, but a busy port instead. That reminded me of an anecdote I was told when we sailed into Honolulu. Apparently, some of the crew were quite disappointed because they were expecting coconut palms, not the skyline of a modern city.

While Tim and I have been basking in the warmth of the South Pacific, folks at home are facing a cold weather advisory with below zero-degree temperatures expected. Wind chills could be as low as 25 degrees below zero. Brrr! I am not missing that weather!

Not only was Viking able to redo the itinerary so that passengers could visit Bora Bora, but the crew was able to arrange new shore excursions for today and a destination performance for this evening. “O Tahiti E” was a vibrant and energetic performance of dance and song that celebrated Tahitian culture. Of course, I would have preferred to watch the performance live, but Viking TV was the next best option for me.

  1. When I have had residual coughing spasms related to a respiratory infection I have used an albuterol inhaler 2 x day to quell the cough. It really helps to stop the spasm and fatigue related to the cough. I do not have a history of asthma but airways can sometimes be reactive after an infection for 6 weeks. Maybe you can discuss this with the doc. Hope you feel better.
