Day 15 – Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Today, we set foot on land after four days at sea, as we arrived in Cabo San Lucas on a gorgeous day. Cabo is located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, and was another new port for me. We anchored in the harbor, along with three other cruise ships.

After being on Viking Sky for two weeks, what excursion did we pick? A boat ride! Yes, Tim and I opted for the included tour, “Land’s End by Boat,” which promised that we would see the natural and cultural beauty of Baja’s southern tip. Here’s the description:

Marvel at striking coastal scenery during a cruise around Land’s End. Tender ashore to meet your tour boat, embarking on a sojourn on the sea that traces the rocky coast of Land’s End, the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula. Admire an icon of Cabo—the famed El Arco, a natural rock formation that creates an arch over azure waters. Nestled between the picturesque shores of Playa del Amor and Playa del Divorcio, this eye-catching monument also marks the spot where the rough waters of the Pacific Ocean meet the calmer ones of the Sea of Cortez. As you cruise, learn about the area’s intriguing history and keep watch for sea lions and other marine life that frequent the area. Conclude your excursion back on shore, where you will then tender to your awaiting ship.

Tim and I tendered ashore an hour or so before our excursion was scheduled to begin and wandered along the tourist shops lining the marina. Tim actually purchased two items – styluses, the only souvenir that he collects, and a small pouch to hold his magnetic, foldable, clip-on sunglasses.

We then boarded the catamaran Oceanus I and made our way out of the busy harbor. We sailed along the coast of Land’s End, admiring the various rock formations.

It was very cool to see the arch in person, and we managed to get a clear shot without the many other boats jockeying for position nearby. El Arco rises three stories above the convergence of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortes. This granite formation was carved by constant tidal and wind erosion at the peninsula's edge and is the signature of Los Cabos. We circled Land’s End and were able to see El Arco from both sides.

Our wildlife sightings included pelicans and one lone seal.

Tim and I enjoyed the short boat ride, but if I ever return to Cabo, I’d like to visit one of the historic towns nearby to discover an older era on the Baja Peninsula.
