Day 22 – Sail the Pacific Ocean

Cruise Director Matt and Assistant Cruise Director Tara have begun to host Coffee Chats every morning on sea days, and I managed to get up in time to attend this one. Pamela, the Hotel Administrator, was the guest this morning, and we learned about her role on Viking Sky.

The first lecture today had nothing to do with our upcoming ports, but it was especially relevant for Viking. Dr. Bryan Babcock presented “The Vikings,” a talk that is given by all Resident Historians. It was interesting to hear his challenge to traditional stereotypes, learn the real story, and examine the Vikings’ influence and legacy.

Since I have only been using my phone as a camera for less than a year, I was very excited to attend Simon and Lisa Thomas’ second photography workshop on “Smartphone (Android) Photography: Pocket Power.” Simon has a great sense of humor and does not take himself seriously, which I enjoy in a speaker. He walked us through the basics, starting with the various camera settings, and I picked up so many tips. For example, I had no idea that one setting would allow me to take pictures by saying “Smile” or “Capture,” instead of pressing the shutter button.

I’m still picking up meals for Tim, so he can take it easy and rest up, and I passed by the most amazing thing when I went to the World Café. Today’s special event was a Cheesecake Station, and the display was gorgeous. I was especially intrigued by the flower arrangements that were made entirely of sugar. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to sample the desserts since I was dining elsewhere.

What a Display!

Dr. Claudia Hackbarth’s afternoon talk was on “Ocean Currents, Gyres, and Climate,” and she explained how water and air currents affect us. Although the subject was interesting, I must confess that I did nod off once or twice.

We had our first Port Talk of this World Cruise segment, and we were introduced to Honolulu, Hawaii, and the various shore excursions that will be offered. I think most people are ready to touch land again.

  1. Wow what an artistic display those cheesecake tables were. Too bad you didn't get to taste any!
