Today is the third of five sea days before we reach Hawaii, and we have been so fortunate to have mostly calm seas. Tim continues to recover from his head and chest cold, but I insisted that he remain in our stateroom and rest. He may have overdone it yesterday.
On a stretch of sea days, I feel like I’ve gone back to college, since my favorite activity is attending lectures, either in person or in our room. Tim and I caught most of George Sranko’s “Life in the Deep Sea.” There are some very strange creatures in the depths of the sea.

Dr. Claudia Hackbarth’s presentation on “The Creation of Polynesia” was very enlightening, and we learned how these islands were formed. She compared the volcanic islands of Polynesia with Iceland, which we will also visit, although I’m not sure she realized that, since most world cruisers will depart in London.

Next up was a lecture on pearls by our resident gem expert Cristian, and, despite multiple technical difficulties, he helped us understand what makes pearls so special. I’ve always loved pearls and often wore them when I lived in Miami. In fact, my friend Kevin dubbed me “Pants and Pearls.”

I finished with Captain Tom Anderson’s talk on “Lighthouses of the Pacific.” Everyone loves lighthouses, including me, but I had no idea how much of a prominent role they played in the Pacific’s history and culture. The photos of more than 100 lighthouses were lovely.

I’m sorry I have no other photos today, but I didn’t do anything that was photo-worthy. I’m including photos of the introductory slides for the lectures I attend because I want to remember the enrichment aspect of the World Cruise.
That’s a good way to remember the topics and speakers, and perhaps link back to them much later on the internet! We’ll do that!
ReplyDeleteDo you do that cheese on the yummy waffles?
What did you take that you wish you did not, and what should you have brought? Obviously these answers will change as the voyage progresses!
I'm glad you like this idea, since many of the speakers do have some of their lectures online.
DeleteI have to admit that while I love Mamsen's waffles, the brown cheese is not my favorite!
Thank you for your question about what I brought with me. I'll make it a point to address that topic in a post on one of our sea days.
