Day 26 – Sail the Pacific Ocean

Today marks the first of five sea days as we sail from Hawaii to Bora Bora. For me, that means lots of lectures and culinary events.I was able to catch most of Dr. Claudia Hackbarth’s talk on “The Bushy Tree of Human Evolution,” where she shared what the latest discoveries are telling us.

It was then on to another photography workshop. These workshops have become so popular that the Viking Sky team moved them from Torshavn to the Sky Theater, which holds so many more people and allows for live recordings. Listening to presenters Todd and Lisa Thomas is a pleasure, and I always learn something new about my phone camera. Their discussions, however, have made me regret leaving my real camera behind, since it has a much better zoom lens than the phone. That camera, although not the greatest, would still have been a better option for our day-long safaris in Africa.

The final lecture of the morning was Patrick Goodness’ thought-provoking presentation on “Polynesian Culture – The Interesting, the Taboo, and the Bizarre.” Patrick began his talk by advising anyone who might have an issue with the topic of transgender that they could leave. I was very heartened that none of the passengers on Viking Sky walked out the door. That’s one more reason I love Viking – the passengers for the most part are more tolerant and willing to consider new perspectives.

The culinary team performed its magic again with a Fresh Tuna Station event. The chefs had purchased a whole tuna yesterday, and it was a sight to behold. Once again, the displays were works of art.
