Tim and I began our second of three days at sea with a lecture by Howard Roitman on “The Discovery of the Indian Ocean and Africa.” He described the many European voyages that “discovered” both Africa and the Indian Ocean with a series of wonderful maps.

It was the Portuguese who first explored this part of the world on a number of voyages. By the early twentieth century, however, multiple European countries had colonized almost the entire African continent.

Viking Sky held another Equator Crossing Ceremony today, which was like the one we experienced on January 15, 2025. Once again, the crew members who had never crossed the line were singled out for initiation. They kissed the fish, heard Cruise Director Cornelia charge them for their crimes, and got the justice they deserved by plunging into the pool fully clothed. These former Pollywogs were now eligible to receive their official “Order of the Shellback” status and could celebrate with a shot of Aquavit. This time, Captain Frederick was the only officer who joined the crew members in jumping into the pool.

Tim and I joined Captain Frederick in the afternoon for a Bridge Tour. Our small group learned about navigation, steering, and all the other components that enable the Viking Sky to carry us to the wonderful places on our itinerary.

This evening, Tim enjoyed A Taste of India in the World Café, while our friend Nancy and I had a girls’ night out at Manfredi’s. We had a wonderful evening, and I never even pulled out my camera to take photos.
