When I opened the curtains this morning, I was stunned by the beauty of the Indian Ocean. I had never seen the water so calm, and the gentle ripples were like a painting. I found the view mesmerizing.

Although Tim and I missed the first lecture of the day, we did make it to Howard Roitman’s talk on “Coffee, Tea…and Opium?” Although he covered much of the same material that we had heard in an earlier lecture, we still learned additional tidbits about how these products shaped East Africa and Asia and how tea led to two wars.

It was then time for lunch, and today’s special event was a Fresh Tuna Station. I confirmed that the tuna being served was the same ones that I saw in the truck yesterday. Lunch was delicious.

Almost everyone I spoke with throughout the day commented on the unusual beauty of the ocean today. It was so serene, and I enjoyed staring at it from my balcony, especially as the sun began to set.
