Day 165 – Ísafjördur, Iceland

Viking Sky arrived in Iceland this morning, and we docked in Ísafjördur, the capital and largest settlement on the Westfjords peninsula in northwestern Iceland. The Westfjords is one of Iceland’s most remote and untouched regions.

Tim and I spent a week in Iceland in 2021, but we did not make it to the Westfjords. I had read about the breathtaking natural beauty and charming settlements of this area, so I was looking forward to our visit, even though I had not reserved an excursion for today.

I knew the weather was cold and windy, but I had no idea how windy until I disembarked with Tim, who was heading to his optional excursion, “Whale Watching in Ísafjarõardjúp.” I had planned to stand by on a different excursion, but I quickly changed my mind. Not only was it bitterly cold, but the wind was so strong that it felt like needles piercing my face.

I took a few minutes to photograph Viking Neptune, our sister ship that was docked next to us, and then returned to our ship. We’ll be visiting Ísafjördur again in six days, so I’ll see the sights then. I soon ran into Tim, whose excursion had been cancelled due to the weather and rough seas.

In the afternoon, those of us continuing to New York were invited to a private Port Talk. As we entered the Star Theater, we were offered flutes of champagne and were welcomed by a row of chefs bearing trays of “lollipops,” bitesize balls of yummy desserts on a stick.

Cruise Director Cornelia began her port talk on Reykjavik as usual, but she then announced a special surprise. Assistant Cruise Director Patricia came on stage with her guitar and began to sing. Cornelia soon joined her for a lovely duet. If all port talks were like this, I would attend more in person, instead of watching them on VikingTV.

As we sailed away from Ísafjördur, we were rocking and rolling and were warned that it would be a rough night at sea. All outdoor furniture was secured, all liquor bottles were moved to a lower shelf, and seasickness bags were made available. Luckily, neither Tim nor I had any issues.

Today marked the end of our seventh World Cruise segment, from Bergen, Norway, to Reykjavik, Iceland. Up next is Reykjavik to New York City, our final segment. I had planned to get a screenshot of the Map Tracker that illustrates this segment, but I completely forgot. Instead, I’m including a section of the World Cruise map.
