Day 5 – Sail the Caribbean Sea

The Star Theater was almost filled to capacity this morning for two excellent lectures. Guest Lecturer Andrew Roberts presented “The Panama Canal: Part 1 – The French,” in preparation for our transit through the canal on December 26. We learned how the French became involved in building a canal so far from home, why they failed, and how the Americans took over. Parts 2 and 3 will follow in the next few days.

Since we will dock in Columbia tomorrow, I was anxious to discover a little more about this country. Our Resident Historian Dr. Robert Cribb enlightened us with the "History of Columbia,” and we learned about the turbulent background of this place.

History of Columbia

Only about 300 of the 800 or so passengers on board the Viking Sky are on the World Cruise. We will pick up the remaining World Cruise passengers in Los Angeles. Some, like Tim and me, will be sailing all the way to New York. Others will disembark in London.

Most passengers, however, are only sailing from Fort Lauderdale to Los Angeles on the “Panama Canal & Pacific Coast” itinerary, and many did not realize that this was the start of the 2024-2025 World Cruise. I’ve enjoyed meeting them, as well as our fellow world cruisers. I just wish I could remember all their names.
