When Tim and I left Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SAMO) in March last year, certain types of items remained to be deaccessioned. Once the park determined what needed to be done, we were asked to complete the final piece of the process.
We were able to prepare the deaccession package remotely. And, this time Tim was a contractor, not a volunteer. We finished the package last November, but SAMO had also asked for one final document.
SAMO requested a final report on the entire deaccession process – a “how-to,” so to speak. Looking back over all that we had done was quite eye-opening. It had been a lot of work.
We titled the report “How to Deaccession a Large Museum Collection Following Loss Resulting from a Natural or Man-Made Disaster – A Case Study.” Hopefully, this report can help other parks if their museum collections should ever suffer a similar disaster.
